Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only 11 days of play – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
