Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
