No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The building of both train projects was supervised by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested pending a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national undertakings.
